Cary is the largest place this site covers outside Durham. The ACS 2024 5-year estimates count 179,306 residents and a median home built in 1999. Only about 12% of homes predate 1980, while roughly a quarter (25.8%) went up in 2010 or later. Two-thirds of homes (66.6%) are owner-occupied and the median value is $580,200.
That mix means many Cary stumps come from trees that reached size alongside the house: pines and fast-growing shade trees crowding a deck, a fence line or a driveway. If your subdivision has an HOA, check your covenants before you schedule removal.
We connect Durham-area homeowners with independent local stump grinding and tree companies for free, no-obligation quotes. Stump Grinding Durham does not grind stumps or remove trees; the company you choose quotes, schedules and does the work directly with you.
Cary’s tree authority comes from a 2000 state law (S.L. 2000-108) that lets the Town regulate trees but excludes “property to be developed for single-family or duplex residential uses.” According to a Town fact sheet, Cary’s development ordinance does not permit topping and protects required buffers and streetscapes; removing buffer vegetation is a Planning question. We found no homeowner tree removal permit and no mention of stumps. If the stump sits in a required buffer, check with the Town first.
For disposal, the Town’s yard waste page describes weekly collection of bundles up to 4 feet long, with a fee-based chipper service for bigger limbs. A stump is a different matter: the Town’s hauler says “tree stumps … are not yard waste and will not be collected.” Build haul-away into your quote or keep the chips.

Learn morePublished cost guides (2025–2026) put stump grinding at about $2–$5 per inch of diameter, around $150–$450 for one average Durham-area stump, and roughly $40–$70 for each additional stump. These are typical ranges, not quotes. See the cost guide and calculator.
We found no Cary homeowner permit for removing a tree or stump, and the state law behind Cary’s tree rules excludes property being developed for single-family or duplex use. Required buffers and streetscapes are protected, and topping is not allowed, so if the stump sits in a buffer or your HOA has rules, check with the Town and your association first.
Do not count on it. The Town collects bundled limbs weekly, but its hauler states that tree stumps are not yard waste and will not be collected, and a big pile of grindings is not bundled brush. Ask the company you hire to haul chips away, or keep them as mulch spread away from the foundation.
Residential grinding typically goes about 6–12 inches below grade, which is usually enough for grass. Ask for deeper grinding if you plan to replant a tree or build a patio there, and expect deeper work to cost more. Get the depth written into the quote so you can check it when the job is done.
